The Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) is seeking a dynamic, visionary, and experienced Catholic leader who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to the important mission and ministry of Catholic education as its new Director of Education and Secretary-Treasurer to the Board. The effective date of the appointment will be on or before September 2, 2024 – to be mutually negotiated in concert with the Board.

Situated just east of Toronto, on the traditional lands of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island, in the diverse and growing Durham Region, the Durham Catholic District School Board shares a sense of community with families, staff and parishes. Guided by the teachings of Jesus, the DCDSB is renowned for providing a comprehensive, faith-centered Catholic education with 38 elementary schools, 7 secondary schools and 9 alternative and continuing education sites. The Board currently serves approximately 22,888 elementary and secondary students in Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, and the townships of Uxbridge, Scugog and Brock, as well as thousands of adult and continuing education learners.

Reporting to the board of eight (8) elected trustees, the Director will work with a dedicated senior administrative team and staff across the system to advance the Board’s Mission: “to be an inclusive Catholic learning community that inspires every student to achieve their full potential through faith and education”, and its compelling Vision and Values through the successful execution of the Board’s 2023-2026 Strategic Plan – Inspire 2026, and responsible implementation of the board’s budget. Annual Compensation: $185,000

Based in our Academic Services offices in Barrie, Ontario, the position is responsible for providing Catholic faith-filled leadership in both local and system-wide initiatives. Working as one of the members of the Educational Leadership Council (Senior Leadership Team), the successful candidate will assist in setting strategic and operational directions for the Board, including academic, program, curriculum and support services; providing ongoing supervision, support and direction to assigned staff and setting service directions for schools.

The position will require the successful candidate to:

  • Work within a collaborative leadership model with other members of the Educational Leadership Council (Senior Leadership Team) to develop and implement on-going Catholic academic curriculum and programming needs.
  • Work in a constructive, integrative and active leadership role as a member of the Board’s Educational Leadership Council (Senior Leadership Team).
  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience with Catholic K-12 curriculum implementation.
  • Prepare and submit reports and recommendations as requested by the Director of Education. Make recommendations to the Director of Education on matters relating to the program services operations, activities and matters that affect the achievement and well-being of students and staff.
  • Lead and direct the design, development and implementation of the Board’s Program Services operational plan through collaborative leadership practices in alignment with the Board’s Mission, Vision and strategic priorities and goals.
  • Manage system budgets, ensuring due diligence, fiscal accountability and transparency.
  • Manage, motivate and lead a team of Program Services staff.
  • Participate as a member of the Senior Leadership Team in labour and employee relations matters, such as contract negotiations and Labour-Management Committees, as required.
  • Represent the Board with community agencies and partners with full autonomy and responsibility for the role, as well as serving as a resource to appropriate Board committees.
  • Respond to and resolve any number of highly sensitive issues on behalf of the Board using constructive conflict resolution skills.
  • Develop and implement portfolio specific policies and procedures to ensure continuous improvement of services and efficient program delivery.
  • Manage organizational risk and ensure compliance with legislative requirements.
  • Provide program analysis using effective and efficient research and planning principles.
  • Prepare and present reports to the Board of Trustees, as required by the Director of Education.
  • Keep abreast of new developments and initiatives related to program services that may affect the Board to assist in improving and enhancing student achievement and well-being.

Required Skills and Qualifications:
The successful candidate will bring the following skills and experiences to the role:

  • Ontario Supervisory Officer’s Qualifications in accordance with The Ontario College of Teachers Act (1996) Regulation 176/10
  • Ontario College of Teachers Certificate of Registration and Certificate of Qualifications.
  • Certified Specialist in Religious Education.
  • Current Pastoral Letter of Reference.
  • Minimum of 5 to 7 years leadership (Principal or equivalent) experience in a Catholic educational environment with experience in both elementary and secondary panels strongly preferred.
  • Proven experience in dealing constructively with a variety of leadership, supervisory, employee, labour and community partner relations matters.
  • Experience working constructively with parents, child advocates, community advocates and government officials.
  • Ability to recommend and co-ordinate system priorities to align with government initiatives and legislative requirements.
  • Proven experience in leading large teams, providing ongoing supervision/support to staff using humanistic and collaborative principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a Kindergarten to Grade 12 academic program with strong skills and knowledge in the areas of effective teaching, learning and assessment practices as they pertain to the delivery of the Ontario curriculum.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively integrate the tenets of Catholic teachings, legislative requirements and responsibilities under the Ontario Human Rights Code.
  • Demonstrated understanding of culturally relevant and responsive practices and principles particularly as it relates to First Nation, Inuit , and Metis communities, anti racism and oppression
  • Strong budgetary and financial accountability and reporting skills.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and technology skills.
  • Superior interpersonal skills exhibiting confidentiality, diplomacy, negotiation, conflict resolution and issue-based problem solving techniques.

This focused revision will involve the development, revision and implementation of curriculum that addresses racism and inequity and ensures that all students see themselves reflected in the teaching and learning in Ontario classrooms.

You will also:
• Support cross-curricular connections to related curriculum areas, including the development and implementation of curriculum-linked and research-informed resources.
• Support ministry priorities in achievement, equity, and well-being
• Review, develop and/or implement resources to support student achievement, equity and well-being.
• Ensure curriculum supports are aligned with ministry priorities (e.g., Education that Works for You, the First Nation, Métis, and Inuit Education Policy Framework, Learning for All, and Growing Success).

Desired Knowledge and Experience:

• Extensive Ontario teaching experience in secondary Technological Education to lead revisions of this curriculum.
• Knowledge of and leadership experience in implementing ministry policies, resources, and curriculum, including Growing Success: assessment, evaluation, and reporting in Ontario’s schools, kindergarten to Grade 12.
• Expertise building anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and anti-discrimination cultures in schools and fostering culturally responsive and relevant, equitable and inclusive learning environments.
• Demonstrated understanding and experience supporting the integration and implementation of Indigenous histories, perspectives, worldviews, pedagogy, and emerging issues related to curriculum-policy making, writing, and research.
• Demonstrated understanding and experience supporting the integration and implementation of Indigenous histories, perspectives, worldviews, pedagogy, and emerging issues related to curriculum and assessment policy making, writing, and research.
• Extensive knowledge of school systems, curriculum implementation, and professional learning that have been developed through work within the school system as an educator, school leader and/or system leader.

• Implementing a range of high-impact instructional and assessment practices in schools designed to identify and meet the needs of diverse learners.
